United States House of Representatives Select Committee
on Missing Persons in Southeast Asia

     House Resolution 335 established the House Select Committee on Missing Persons in Southeast Asia. Congressman G.V. Montgomery chaired the Committee and its members included Congressmen Henry B. Gonzalez, John J. Moakley, Richard Ottinger, Thomas Harkin, Jim Lloyd, Paul McCloskey, Benjamin Gilman, Tennyson Guyer, and Congresswoman Patricia Shroeder. The Committee conducted a 15-month study and investigation of the problems associated with American servicemen and civilians who were still missing as a result of combat operations in Indochina and have not been accounted for by the governments of Indochina. The Committee’s Final Report was issued on December 13, 1976.

     The purpose of the Committee was “to conduct a full and complete investigation and study of (1) the problem of United States servicemen still identified as missing in action, as well as those known dead whose bodies have not been recovered as a result of military operations in North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia and the problem of United States civilians identified as missing or unaccounted for as well as those known dead whose bodies have not been recovered in North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia; (2) the need for additional international inspection teams to determine whether there are servicemen still held as prisoners of war or civilians held captive or unwillingly detained in the aforementioned areas.”
