From the time of the invention of the camera to the
present, photographers have been deeply interested in capturing war. The American
Civil War is no exception. Although complex, time consuming, and often times requiring the
service of two photographers - one to mix chemicals, one to manipulate the camera--many
Civil War photographs were taken and remain today. The following photographs of African-American soldiers were taken during the Civil War. What do the photographs suggest about
the roles African-American soldiers played during the war?
