About the Collection
This component of The Nineteenth Century in Print: The Making of America in Books and Periodicals will present a large body of published books. The first release incorporates over 1,500 monographs, mostly published between 1850 and 1880. These books have been digitized and mounted by the University of Michigan as part of the Making of America project. For more information on that project and on the collaboration that is resulting in this digital collection, see The Nineteenth Century in Print: About the Collection and A Distributed Digital Library Collaboration.
The topics illuminated by this collection are wide-ranging, with an emphasis on social history. A Sampler of Collection Themes highlights this richness. The collection also offers works that complement other American Memory collections. For example, Reports of Explorations and Survey to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean provides background for the Railroad Maps Collection and a rich resource on the zoology and botany of the western half of the United States to complement The Evolution of the Conservation Movement.
