This collection consists of 2,222 plates (20 volumes and 20 portfolios) of one of the best recognized and most significant records ever produced of the culture and daily life of about 80 Native American tribes. The comprehensive collection illuminates Native American Indians' architecture and shelter; baskets, pottery, and utensils; boats and dress; tools for fishing and hunting; customs; and ceremonies. In addition to photographs, Curtis recorded important information regarding tribal customs, the meaning of emblematic decoration, and biographical and historical data. Northwestern University will provide bibliographical and introductory materials to illuminate the historical context as well as a variety of search strategies to make the collection accessible to scholars, the K-12 community, and the general public.
