Sportsmen and Conservationism, c.1850-1920:
Additional Resources in the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress's General Collection and Rare Book and Special Collections Division include significant materials reflecting the important and complex role assumed by sportsmen--particularly (though not exclusively) wealthier men concerned about the loss of wildlife and wilderness as a recreational resource, often in opposition to the activities of less-wealthy hunters who viewed wildlife as a basic economic and cultural resource--in leading and supporting the growth of the American conservation movement from the mid nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Of particular interest is the Rare Book Division's Theodore Roosevelt Hunting Library, his personal collection of some 254 volumes on hunting, natural history, exploration, ornithology, and sport, most of which were published during this era. In addition, after consulting works included in the Conservation Collection, readers who have direct access to the Library, or to other major research libraries, might also wish to look at titles such as those on the list below. They might also wish to consult some of the titles on two other Additional Resources lists, "State-Level Fish and Game Conservation Measures, c.1850-1920", and "Nature and Wilderness as Recreational Resources, c.1850-1920."
